Stone Patios VA Patio & Hardscape Contractor

About Stone Patios VA

A Herndon-based patio and hardscape contractor, building Northern Virginia backyards that last since 1991.

Stone Patios VA is a locally owned and operated patio and hardscape contractor based in Herndon and serving homeowners throughout Northern Virginia. Since 1991 we have specialized in one thing and done it exceptionally well: building beautiful, durable patios and outdoor living spaces out of pavers and natural stone.

We started this company because too many homeowners were getting patios that cracked, walls that leaned, and crews that disappeared mid-project. We do it differently. Every job gets a properly engineered base, real attention to grading and water, and a crew that treats your property like its own, from the first measurement to the final clean sweep.

Most of our work is custom paver patios, flagstone terraces, walkways, steps, and retaining walls across Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, and Prince William counties. You can see recent work in our project gallery. And if you are getting bids right now, our guide on how to choose a patio contractor in Northern Virginia covers the questions we believe every homeowner should ask, including the ones we get asked ourselves.

How we build

Anyone can make a patio look good on day one. The difference shows up in year ten. Here is what we do under the surface, and why.

Finished paver patio and block sitting wall in a Northern Virginia backyard, built on a compacted stone base

Base preparation in lifts

A patio fails from the bottom up. We excavate to stable soil, then build the base in thin layers called lifts, compacting each layer before the next one goes down. Dumping all the stone at once and packing the top is faster, and it is how patios end up with dips after a few winters. Compacting in lifts is slower. It is also why our surfaces stay flat.

Flagstone in a full mortar bed

Our flagstone is never dry-laid. Every flagstone patio, walk, and landing we build is set in a full mortar bed over a reinforced concrete slab. The slab carries the load. The mortar locks each stone in place. The joints stay tight instead of opening up, so the stones do not rock underfoot and weeds have nowhere to grow.

Terraced stone retaining walls and steps engineered for a sloped clay-soil yard in Northern Virginia

Built for freeze-thaw and clay soil

Northern Virginia sits on heavy clay that holds water, and our winters cross the freezing line dozens of times a season. Trapped water heaves hardscape. So we grade every base to shed water, size the base for the soil under it, and detail walls and steps so water moves through and away. The freeze-thaw cycle works on the ground, not on your patio.

What guides the work

Do it right or not at all

We never cut corners on the base, drainage, or compaction. The parts you can't see are what make hardscape last.

Local accountability

We live and work in Northern Virginia. Our reputation is built one neighbor's backyard at a time.

Clear communication

You'll always know the plan, the schedule, and exactly where things stand. No surprises, no pressure.

Craftsmanship that lasts

We stand behind every project we build, long after the final sweep.
