What a proper paver walkway installation includes

A walkway carries more foot traffic per square foot than almost any patio, so the base matters just as much on a three-foot path as it does on an open terrace. We excavate to stable ground, compact a crushed-stone base in lifts, screed a bedding layer, set the pavers, then lock both edges with a hidden restraint and sweep polymeric sand into the joints so nothing spreads or heaves.

The finish is where a walkway ties the house together. A soldier-course border along each side frames the path and picks up the trim, steps, or porch, while a running-bond or herringbone field gives comfortable, even footing all the way from the driveway to the door.

Grades and drainage that keep a walkway safe

Northern Virginia clay swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries, and a path that traps water turns into an ice sheet every freeze-thaw winter. We pitch every walkway to shed water off to the sides, and on low or shaded runs we build in drainage so the surface clears fast and stays safe underfoot.

Common questions

How wide should a paver walkway be?

For a main front entry we usually build four to five feet wide so two people can walk side by side, and about three feet for a garden or utility path. We size it to how you actually use the route and to the scale of the house, then confirm the layout with you before anyone digs.

Will a paver walkway get slippery or icy in winter?

We pitch every path to shed water off to the sides so it drains fast instead of pooling and freezing, and on shaded runs we add drainage. Pavers also give more grip than a smooth poured slab. Any surface can ice over in a hard freeze, so setting grades that move water away quickly is what keeps the path safe.

Can you match a new walkway to my existing patio?
