How we build a flagstone walkway installation

A flagstone walkway installation is mostly the part you never see. We excavate to stable subgrade, then pour and reinforce a concrete base along the full run of the path before setting a single stone.

Each stone is bedded in a full mortar bed and the joints are grouted, so the finished surface is tight underfoot and safe to walk year-round. A mortar-set path over concrete is far more work than dropping flagstone on sand, and it lasts for decades in our climate, which is the only way we build it.
