Sloped lots are everywhere in the older parts of Fairfax and Vienna, and steps are usually what turns an awkward hillside into a yard you can actually use. The challenge in our climate is frost movement: steps set on shallow or poorly drained bases heave at different rates, and even a half inch of difference between treads is enough to catch a toe. We build each step on a compacted, drained base so the whole run moves together, which here means it barely moves at all.

Walkout basements are common in newer Northern Virginia construction, and the drop from the upper yard to that lower level is often five feet or more. We handle those transitions with stairways tied into low walls, holding rise and run consistent the whole way down, because uneven steps are where falls happen. On long or steep runs we add landings so the descent feels like a garden path instead of a chore.
